The M-16 was a rifle that was introduced in early 1960s. It was issued with plenty of rumors & came without cleaning kits. The Department of Defense modified the ammo to try and save cost and gummed up the M-16’s works. The rifle went through a series of regular modifications. The ammunition was modified, and the “M-16” era came to an end. There was the “M-16a1”. There have been plenty of modifications over the years. When you speak about the M-16, you are talking about a family of rifles/carbines.
This blog post reviews some of the outstanding parts and features of the rifle that makes it a great rifle to carry.
Upper Receiver & Barrel Assembly
Rifle barrel assembly is air-cooled, incorporates flash suppressor & front sight assembly, while carrying the two hand guards and the sling swivel. Upper receiver comprises of a rear sight, ejection port, ejection port cover, together with a casing for the bolt carrier & bolt assembly. A forward assist assembly is utilized on the M16A1 weapon.
Lower Receiver & Extension Assembly
M16A1 Lower Receiver comes with a trigger assembly, sear, hammer assembly, selector lever, rifle grip, bolt catch, and shoulder gun stock assembly. The shoulder gun stock assembly houses the action spring, buffer assembly, alongside extension assembly.
Sights
The most distinguishing ergonomic characteristics of the M16 are the carrying handle and rear sight assembly placed on top of the receiver. This was derived from the original AR-10 design, the carrying handle incorporated a rear sight that may be set to custom range settings, and further acted as a shield for the charging handle.
The M16 carry handle further encompasses a mounting groove interface and a hole in the bottom of the handle groove for mounting a Colt 3×20 telescopic sight; with bullet drop compensation altitude adjustment knob for a range of 100-500 yards. This emulates the maximum effective range of 503 yards for the M16A2 and earlier. The Colt 3×20 telescopic sight is calibrated for parallax-free at 200 yards.
Design
The M16 is a lightweight air-cooled, gas-fired, magazine assault rifle that features a rotating bolt. The m16a1 lower receiver is assembled from 7075 aluminum alloy, the barrel, bolt, and bolt carrier are steel, and the handguard, pistol grip and stock are made from plastic. The M16a1 internal piston action originates from the ArmaLite AR-10 and ArmaLite AR-15 actions. Designed by Eugene Stoner, this internal piston action system is often called a direct impingement system but doesn’t use standard direct impingement system.
The Sum Up
M16A1 rifle is easy to shoot. It is distinguished by outstanding accuracy. It boasts a longer range than most other comparative rifles in that range. To sum up, the M-16A1 is lightweight, easy to use, very accurate, fires a fast, rather powerful cartridge; needs regular maintenance to keep it functioning well and is more expensive to build. It is one of the “classic rifles”, that can adapt as needed. The best thing is that its dimensions are standardized, and it is modular. This allows the rifle to be changed rather easily. All in all it’s a handy rifle to carry.
